Slowpoke, known in Japan as ヤドン (Yadon), is an odd kind of Pokémon, of the Water and Psychic types. It is usually very slow-witted and relaxed. It evolves into a Slowbro at Level 37 (despite the many stories that Slowpoke would evolve when a Shellder bites its tail), but it can evolve into Slowking as well, when it is traded away while holding a King's Rock.
Biology[]
Slowpoke is a (usually) quadruped creature, resembling a cross between a salamander and a hippopotamus. Its skin is colored pink and its muzzle is tan-ish cream-colored. Each of its feet is tipped with a single claw. On its head are two round ears, each with a swirl inside. It usually has a dopey expression on its face, consisting of a silly smile on its muzzle and two large eyes with tiny pupils, usually not focused on anything in particular. It has a long tail that ends with a white tip.
This tail is actually sweet and sappy for many kinds of fish Pokémon like Basculin. Slowpoke uses this tail as a lure while it is fishing, which is considered a hobby for most Slowpoke. It doesn't worry about its tail being bitten off; it wouldn't notice for at least 24 hours and it'll grow back later. When a Shellder happens to bite its tail down, it usually appears to evolve into Slowbro, as the Shellder's usual bivalve shell transforms into a completely different, menacing-looking conch shell.
Slowpoke is infamous for its underdeveloped intelligence, and often forgets what it was about to do. It may take a while to respond to outside stimuli. For example, when it is under attack, it takes five seconds to actually feel pain after it was attacked.

Slowpoke seems to draw inspiration to many things, like Giant salamanders and hippos. Slowpoke may also be based on an otter, due to its association with marine nature and shellfish.

Slowpoke's name is literally a word used as an insult to slow people.
Yadon may be a combination of 宿借り yadokari (hermit crab) and 鈍 don (slow/dull/stupid). Alternatively, it may also derive from 宿主 yadonushi, ([parasitic] host), based on its relationship with Shellder in its evolutions.
